In 2019, as the automotive world eagerly awaited Mercedes-Benz’s unveiling of the new G63 AMG, there was widespread speculation about whether the second generation would match the legacy of its predecessor and retain the unique appeal that made the G Wagon an icon.

When it was shown to the public for the first time, it was a big relief that it was still the SUV we knew, but enhanced. The G-wagen was completely redesigned for the first time in decades, its iconic design has been expertly preserved and carefully evolved.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 maintained its renowned off-road capabilities and rugged features, similar to those found in the Mercedes-Benz G550. However, it now featured a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine, delivering 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

This power is managed by a nine-speed automatic transmission equipped with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, enhancing the vehicle’s all-wheel-drive system that is designed to favor rear-wheel traction, thus improving handling and acceleration.

The G63 also steps into the 21st century with its technological advancements. While the previous generation came with features like blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and adaptive cruise control, the 2019 model introduces additional safety features such as forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.

On the inside, technology is front and center with two 12.3-inch displays. One serves as a customizable gauge cluster, and the other operates the COMAND infotainment system. Users can control COMMAND through a dial on the center console or by utilizing the two thumb pads on the steering wheel, which allow for smartphone-like swiping actions.

This design means you can keep your hands on the wheel for tasks like changing the radio station, though the central dial remains a viable option, offering a satisfyingly tactile response.

Also, the G-Class got larger significantly, stretching 4 inches longer and almost 5 inches wider. This enlargement is a major advantage for those seated in the back, offering an impressive 6 inches of additional legroom.

The G63 has drive modes for Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual that you can change:

Comfort: Designed to maximize fuel consumption, ECO Mode modifies climate control settings and offers earlier gear changes.

Sport: This mode sharpens your steering, and allows revs to run higher before gear shifts. This means you’re enjoying the benefit of high-rev torque in naturally aspirated petrol models. Your suspension will flatten which improves cornering at high speeds.

Sport+: Sport+ Mode pushes the limits of performance even further. It’s also worth noting that when in Sport+ Mode, the ECO-START® system will be deactivated.

Individual: Individual Mode allows you to take control of your vehicle’s performance. Use the touchscreen display to create your own custom drive mode to deliver your ideal combination of performance, comfort, and fuel economy.

While the original G-Wagon has rightfully earned its place in automotive history, the 2nd generation is no slouch.

Some of the competitors to the G63 include the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentagya, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Land Rover Range Rover.

Although these are other great competitors, the Mercedes-AMG G63 stands alone in it’s unique category in terms of how it looks, purpose and history.

2022 Mercedes-AMG G63

This year, Mercedes released a special, limited series of Edition 55 models, which will be distinguished by a striking red-and-black interior theme, distinctive exterior graphics, and large 22-inch wheels.

The Edition 55 was created to honour the moment in 1967 when Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher laid the initial groundwork for the brand’s high-performance AMG division. Now, 55 years later, Mercedes is commemorating that milestone.

Only 55 of these exclusive models were sold in the United States, making them a rare acquisition for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The base price for the G63 Edition 55 started at $176,000.

For 2022, the enhanced 4×42 makes a comeback to the lineup, and this iteration is uniquely available for the Mercedes-AMG G63 model.

The Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² distinguishes itself from the regular G63 with its significantly raised suspension for greater ground clearance, larger wheels and off-road tires, body modifications such as the flared carbon fibre wheel arches, and enhanced off-road equipment such as portal axles which allows for a significant suspension lift.

Mercedes-Benz claims that this new Squared version represents the most customizable G-Class special edition ever created by them. Some of the other options for the exterior include roof rack, ladder, carbon fibre wheel arch extensions, a carbon roof spoiler, even a carbon spare wheel cover.

The starting price for the Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² was $350,000.

2023 Mercedes-AMG G63

For the 2023 model year, Mercedes has kept changes to the G63 minimal, introducing a few notable enhancements to refresh its appeal.

Among these updates is the addition of the G manufaktur Logo package which shines an AMG “G” logo on the ground next to the door when the vehicle unlocks, aimed at allowing you to customize your G-Class to stand out distinctly. This personalization scheme presents over a million possible combinations, beginning with your selection from an array of 29 G manufaktur exclusive paint colors.

This extensive choice ensures that your G-Class truly reflects your personal style and preferences.

Additionally, enthusiasts of the G63 4×4 Squared will find two new exclusive paint options to choose from: Copper Orange Magno and Brilliant Blue Magno, enriching the vehicle’s aesthetic choices.

Furthermore, a novel option for 2023 is the availability of a Cherry Wood floor for the luggage compartment in the G63 4×4², marking a stylish update to its luxury features. These subtle yet impactful changes contribute to the vehicle’s enduring legacy and appeal.

2024 Mercedes-AMG G63

The 2024 AMG G63 continues as a carryover model.

A revamped G-class, featuring more streamlined styling and additional powertrain options, is set for 2025, marking the debut of the new EQG G-class electric variant.

While Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed detailed information, it is anticipated that the upcoming models may include more efficient powertrains, with a hybrid option being a likely addition.

Mercedes-AMG G63 Common Problems

The Mercedes-AMG G63, despite its reputation for a luxurious and robust SUV, is not immune to certain issues that owners and potential buyers should be aware of.

It is always recommended to get a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) from an authorised dealer or a trusted independent mechanic to identify any possible concerns.

Steering and Suspension: Owners report difficulty maintaining control on less than ideal roads, with the car tending to veer off course. This suggests that the vehicle’s steering and suspension may not handle rough terrain as comfortably as expected.

Outdated Multimedia System: Users have faced challenges with the multimedia interface, notably with CarPlay. Issues include buggy operation, black screens, system freezes, long loading times, and the necessity for a wired connection. The system’s design, seemingly outdated compared to newer models, detracts from user experience.

Malfunctioning Parking Sensors and Radars: The sensors and radars behave erratically, especially in winter conditions with dirt and snow, leading to constant alerts, system shutdowns, and reboots. This can be particularly distracting and frustrating for drivers.

Reliability Concerns: Some owners have had to replace major parts such as the steering rack, brakes (multiple times due to noise issues), and the transfer case, alongside numerous interior components. Frequent visits to the dealer, even if repairs are covered by warranty, raise concerns about the vehicle’s long-term reliability.

Infotainment and Electrical Issues: Problems include the infotainment screen going black, unresponsive controls (both on the center console and steering wheel touchpads), and delayed screen responses. There are also instances of the vehicle failing to start on the first attempt, which may point to underlying software or electrical system issues.

These issues, as reported by G63 owners, highlight a range of potential concerns from electronic and software glitches to mechanical and reliability challenges, affecting the overall driving and ownership experience.

Here is a rough estimate of typical service costs associated with the Mercedes-AMG G63:

Oil Change: Costs can range from $300 to $400 at independent mechanics, but at dealerships, this service might cost between $600 to $900, depending on the oil used and the dealership’s labour rates.

Minor Service: This service package, including an oil change, cabin air filters, and engine air filters, can cost around $1,000 to $1,500 at a dealership. Independent luxury car service shops may offer slightly lower prices.

Major Service: Including all items in the minor service, plus replacement of spark plugs, brake fluid flush, and transmission fluid flush, you might expect to pay between $2,500 to $4,000 at a dealership, with the higher end accounting for labour and parts specific to the G63.

Tires: For a set of high-performance all season tires suitable for the G63, such as the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season, costs can range from $1,200 to $2,000, depending on the tire size and specifications required for the vehicle.

Brakes: While the rotors on the G63 should last a long time, they should run about $1,000 each. And the cost for a full set of aftermarket brake pads that meet OE (original equipment) specifications is approximately $500 to $800.

Transmission: While generally reliable, transmission services or repairs for the AMG Speedshift MCT can be costly due to the advanced technology and labour involved.

Please note, these estimates should be used as a guideline. For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, it’s recommended to consult directly with a Mercedes-Benz dealership or a reputable independent mechanic specializing in high-end vehicles.

Extended Warranty and Service Packages:

Mercedes-Benz often offers service and maintenance packages that can be purchased with a new vehicle or within the original factory warranty period. These can help to mitigate some of the costs associated with routine maintenance.

Mercedes-AMG G63 Price and Values (G63 4×4²)

The Best Mercedes-AMG G63 To Buy

When it comes to buying a G63, there are a few key factors to consider that can affect the car’s long-term value.

For the G63 that most likely appreciated in value will be the special off-road variant G63 4×42, with its stand out features and distinctive off road styling, it will be a collectors item in the coming future. Some might like the Edition 55 models, as there were unique features that would make it stand out as a special edition, but the changes might not be enough for it to have a large margin compared to a standard G63.

Since there has not been as many different variants released for the G63, you should look for the ones with the right options. One’s that come with optional interior upgrades and packages to any AMG exterior packages are a bonus.

Additionally, if you find a G63 that has the AMG Performance package, it would be an option you’d enjoy if you like to do spirited driving.

In the context of a shifting automotive market leaning towards electrification, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine in the G63 stands out as an increasingly attractive choice  to those who prioritize traditional performance SUV characteristics.

Additionally, the condition and mileage of the car are also important factors to consider when buying a G63. There are many that have been driven hard and have been neglected. But the ones that are more likely to retain their value in the long run and will fetch the most money will be a well-maintained example with low mileage.

It is also important to note that having a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) done is necessary. With these types of vehicles, they may be used more frequently, leading to increased wear and tear, which can result in hidden issues or potential future repairs that are not immediately apparent. A thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic can uncover these problems, ensuring that you are fully aware of the vehicle’s condition before making a purchase decision.

Therefore, it’s important to do your research, compare prices, and look for well-maintained examples if you are considering purchasing a G63 with the goal of not losing any money.

Conclusion

In conclusion, for around ($180,000+) the Mercedes-AMG G63 is a great choice for a super-luxury SUV that you can rely on that will hold its value.

While some of its competitors are the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and Land Rover Range Rover, the G63 stands out as a unique blend of rugged off-road capability and luxury, offering an unmistakable design and performance that merges the heritage of Mercedes-Benz with state-of-the-art technology and comfort.

If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, you cannot go wrong with a G63.
