Peugeot opens up the seven-seater EV market with a practical, classy, sensibly-sized and appealingly mature mid-sized SUV

Seven-seat electric cars have been in short supply for some time. Other than a handful of fairly short-range, van-based options, the Mercedes EQB has had the market to itself for a few years, with the bigger Kia EV9 only arriving last year. And now, the new Peugeot e-5008 has joined the fray.Based on the STLA Medium platform, you’ll be able to have the new 5008 with a 1.2 petrol hybrid or a 1.6 petrol plug-in hybrid with a range of 48 miles, but here we’re focussing on the electric e-5008, which has lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries of either 73- or 96kWh of capacity. If range is your priority, then the big battery e-5008 arrives in early 2025 and will manage a WLTP range of up to 410 miles. The 73kWh, dual-motor e-5008 deliveries start at a similar time, and manages 311 miles of official range despite all-wheel drive and 318bhp. The single-motor 73kWh model will likely be the biggest seller; it turns up this summer, and manages the same 311 miles of range, although all of the WLTP figures are yet to be finalised.Charging speeds max out at 160kW, which is claimed to be good enough for 62 miles of range in 10 minutes or 20-80% in 30 minutes. Not bad, but also nothing that’s going to worry Tesla, Kia or Hyundai.
