The traditionally recommended interval for changing your oil on a gas-powered vehicle is every 3,000 miles or three months. However, recent improvements in technology have changed that thinking, and some vehicles can go much longer. It’s a little different for diesel engines.

If you only drive short distances and don’t often reach high speeds, or if you tow a lot, you may need to change your oil sooner than if you drove at highway speeds more often without towing.

Fortunately, every manufacturer has guidelines on how often you should change your oil depending on how much you drive and in what conditions. It’s important to always check your owner’s manual for these guidelines.

The good news is that changing your oil is a DIY job that almost anyone can do. It’s even easier when you have an oil change kit.

Basic Steps for Changing Oil

You don’t need any unusual tools to do an oil change. The basic equipment includes an oil filter wrench, a wrench that can remove the drain plug, a new oil filter, an oil drain pan to catch the old oil, and new diesel oil in the amount that’s required for your engine. The following are seven basic steps for changing the oil in your diesel truck.

Step 1 – Warm your engine up first, then shut it off and set the parking brake. Open the hood and loosen the oil cap.

Step 2 – Place a container beneath the oil drain, then loosen the plug with a wrench. Pull the plug out and wait for the old oil to drain. Wipe up the drain plug area and replace the plug. Don’t over-tighten the plug.

Step 3 – Remove the air filter cover and cover the inlets with a clean cloth.

Step 4 – Remove the oil filter with the filter wrench, then slowly lower it while keeping it upright so it doesn’t spill. Lubricate the seal on the new filter with some new oil and install it. Remove the cloth and replace the air filter cover.

Step 5 – Pour the appropriate amount of diesel oil into the engine, but check the dipstick until it shows three-quarters full. Replace the cap and start the engine. Wait for the oil pressure to rise, then shut it off again.

Step 6 – Wait for it to cool down again, then check the dipstick again and add oil until it’s at the correct level.

Step 7 – Replace the oil cap.

Safety Tips

There are a few safety tips you should keep in mind every time you change your oil. Always park on level ground, block off your tires, and use jack stands if you need to lift the vehicle.

Even though it’s advisable to warm up your engine so that the oil will flow better, don’t try to change your oil directly after driving for any length of time as the engine and oil will be very hot.
