The Lexus RZ Sport Concept is a rowdy re-interpretation of a popular SUV, but what does it say about the direction of the modified scene?
Usually, Pebble Beach is a place that most of us at Fast Car associate with a somewhat pretentious parade of million-dollar classics, and even more pretentious outfits. But, this year, Lexus is set to disrupt Monterey Car Week with its RZ Sport Concept. This funky in-house modified creation made its worldwide debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but its presence in California marks the first time its wheels will roll on US soil.
Let’s take a closer look at what it’s all about…
Lexus RZ Sport Concept Specs
The Lexus RZ Sport Concept is a modified vehicle based on the Lexus RZ 450e, a fully-electric SUV. The powertrain remains identical to the standard car, with two motors at either end; the front one producing 201hp, and the rear producing 107hp. In fairness, that combined stock output of 308hp is pretty respectable. More attention has clearly gone into the car’s exterior though.
The outside styling tweaks include wider arches, more aggressive front features and equally sharp sideskirts and splitters. Oh, and the pièce de résistance – a double wing (triple if you count the tailgate ducktail) set-up at the rear. How early 2000s is that?!
In addition to the brawny bodywork, Lexus has equipped the RZ Sport Concept with 35mm lower suspension, chunkier tires, and bucket seats for both front and rear passengers.
What Is The Future Of Car Modification?
While this particular build is a fun one-off, it does beg the question of what will the modified car scene look like in the coming decade/s? As everyone knows, SUVs are killing off hatchbacks, sedans, and coupes, all around the world. So, will this sort of vehicle become a more common sight at modified car shows, or will the tuning community hold on to the treasured traditional models of old?
Whatever the actual style of vehicle may be, one thing that’s for sure is that EVs in all their shapes and sizes – SUV or not – will inevitably get more of a foothold within the enthusiast scene. Whether that’s in the form of big-power Teslas, new-age muscle cars, or quirky low-end builds based on cute superminis like the Honda E or electric Mini, they’re coming. Luckily, if you want to get a head-start on that new wave of tech and trends, we’ve got just the resources you need. Check out our in-depth guides to modifying and tuning EVs!
