The 6.4L Powerstroke is a diesel engine produced by Ford Motor Company. It was introduced in 2008 as a replacement for the 6.0L Powerstroke in the Ford Super Duty lineup. The 6.4L Powerstroke is a V8 engine that features dual turbochargers and produces 350-400 horsepower and 650-800 lb-ft of torque, depending on the model. It was used in Ford trucks from 2008 to 2010, and was known for its reliability and improved fuel efficiency compared to the 6.0L Powerstroke.

The recommended oil for a 6.4L Powerstroke engine is a high-quality diesel engine oil with a viscosity of 5W-40, meeting the American Petroleum Institute (API) CJ-4 standard. This type of oil provides the necessary protection and performance for the engine, and is suitable for use in both high- and low-temperature conditions. Additionally, using a diesel engine oil that is specifically formulated for high-mileage engines and meets the API CK-4 standard is recommended for 6.4L Powerstroke engines with more than 75,000 miles.

Typically, we recommend to always follow the “Severe Service” interval. It’s always better to change to oil and filter to much, than to not change the oil and filter enough.

6.4 normal service interval is defined as follows:

Oil Filter: 10,000 miles (16,000 km)
Fuel Filters: 20,000 miles (32,000 km)

Severe Service interval is defined as:

Oil Filter: 5,000 miles (8,000 km), 200 engine hours or 3 months (Whichever occurs first)
Fuel Filters: 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 400 engine hours or 6 months

In almost all situations, We recommend to follow the Severe Service schedule.

Note that you do not have to use only Motorcraft oil. Any name brand oil will suffice and offer the same protection, or better.

Oil Filter

The 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel uses a cartridge style oil filter, located on the top of the engine.
When the oil filter is removed, the oil filter housing drain valve is automatically opened to drain most of the oil from the housing.
The oil filter element snaps into the oil filter lid.
Note: The oil filter lid should be removed before draining the oil from the oil pan so that the oil can drain from the filter housing into the oil pan.

Standard Operating Procedures:

Make sure the vehicle is off.
Put vehicle in “park.”
Remove key from ignition.
Set the parking brake.
Chock the wheels.
Pull the hood release lever.
Open the hood.

Reminder: Dispose of all hazardous materials according to local, state, and federal laws.

Oil Filter: Replacement

First loosen the oil filter cap which will open the oil filter drain and allow the oil from the filter housing to drain into the crankcase.
Drain the oil from the oil pan.
After all of the oil has drained from the oil pan remove the oil filter and discard it in the appropriate location.
Install the new oil filter element and tighten the oil filter cap to the recommended torque. This will close the oil filter drain.
Refill crankcase with the correct volume of recommended oil.
Note: The oil filter snaps into the oil filter lid.
